VR Seminars: Literature and Outline

The starting point of a seminar topic is often a scientific paper, which will be handed out by your supervisor and which forms the basis for further literature review on the topic. On the one hand references of the paper are an important source as they explain the topic in more detail. On the other hand relevant keywords stand out while working on the basis paper. With these query databases can be searched for relevant reference papers.

We assume that general procedures for literature review are known. Appropriate knowledge can be gained, e.g., by the training "Literaturrecherche für Informatiker", which is offered by the computer science library. At the beginning of each semester, we are happy to arrange an appointment for this course for interested students. It should be noted that according to the course handbook the participation in the training of undergraduate students is mandatory once.

The essential references for understanding and work on the topic should be summarized in a list of references. The literature review on this list, therefore, forms the basis for your written paper. For each relevant paper this list should include a complete reference (names of authors, title, source), a brief summary (5 - 10 bullet points or 3 - 5 sentences), and a short explanation why the paper is of relevance.

Based on the literature list, an outline of the written paper is to be created. Here, the planned content of the individual chapters should be given by short sentences or bullet, so that a common thread can be seen. There is no general recommendation with respect to the structure of the outline. However, a common outline which works in most cases is presented in the following:

  • Introduction
  • Related Work
  • Main part (divided into sections)
  • Conclusion
  • References

To create the literature list and the outline the LaTeX template is to be used. Literature list and outline will be discussed with your supervisor after the deadline according to the time schedule in order to prepare you to start writing the actual paper.
