Successful Event „VR in Industry“

Since its first hype in the 1990s, the discipline of Virtual Reality (VR) is on its way towards a serious and powerful tool in scientific and industrial applications. Just recently, top-quality and affordable VR devices came onto the market, making VR even more attractive as a tool in science as well as industry. For the latter, it offers a wide range of new and innovative ways in several areas: in marketing for product presentations, in design and product development for virtual prototyping and simulation as well as in special courses for training in collaborative worlds in which aspects like maintenance can be trained or observed.

The issues arising in this context are, how VR can be optimally integrated into the existing processes in industry, which hardware and software are required and which costs are incurred for a company?

To answer these questions we teamed up with the TEMA Technologie Marketing AG, and organized as well as partially hosted The VR in Industry Days in Aachen on July, 4th to 5th. In a joint effort with the Tema AG, we set up an interesting and varied conference program containing business cases from industry, insights into academic research as well as several live demonstrations in an exhibition as well as in our VR Lab, presented by industrial partners as well as academic VR experts.

We are proud that Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Riedel from Fraunhofer IAO as well as Prof. Dr.-Ing. Philipp Slusallek from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, Saarland University, accepted our invitation for keynote talks. Prof. Riedel gave an entertaining insight in 25 years of VR and the evolution of industrial VR applications, while Prof. Slusallek explained the benefits and challenges of VR in the application area of autonomous driving.

Besides organizing, we also actively configured the conference program. Prof. Kuhlen gave a talk about the controversial issue of HMD versus CAVE, a topic not only of interest for the industry but also for academia and a hot topic for panel discussions on the past and future VR conferences. Besides, Patric Schmitz and Andrea Bönsch gave an insight on their research challenges in the areas of Redirected Walking as well as embedding Virtual Agents in scientific and industrial applications.

The feedback of our about 200 guests and 15 exhibitors on the two-day conference was very positive and a lot of participants asked for a repetition of this event in 2018. So, a great success!
